The Barking Deer or Muntjak

The call of this deer, from a distance sounds much like that of a dog. The barking deer is diurinal in habit and keeps to thick jungle and come to graze in open clearing in the wild. In the Himalayas and South India, it occurs upto the level of 5000 to 8000 feet, sometimes eve higher. Its food consistes of various leaves and grasses and wild fruit. When alarmed, and in fight, these deer give out a series of short cackling barks.
